Quantum tunneling refers to the general physical phenomenon where a particle tunnels through a barrier that it cannot overcome, i.e. it takes a shortcut. Tunneling plays an essential role in several physical, chemical, and biological phenomena, such as radioactive decay or the manifestation of large kinetic isotope effects in chemicals of enzymatic reactions.

Tänk dig att du har en tennisboll  Quantum tunnelling or tunneling (US) is the quantum mechanical phenomenon where a wavefunction can propagate through a potential barrier. The transmission through the barrier can be finite and depends exponentially on the barrier height and barrier width. The wavefunction may disappear on one side and reappear on the other side. The quantum tunneling effect is a quantum phenomenon which occurs when particles move through a barrier that, according to the theories of classical physics, should be impossible to move through.

What is quantum tunnelling? Imagine releasing a quantum mechanical particle, like an electron or proton, into a space on one side of an potential energy hill. Since you’re sure that the particle

This is similar to cluster decay, in which an atomic nucleus emits a small "cluster" of neutrons and protons (e.g. 12C).

This means quantum tunneling must come to the rescue.

This is the phenomenon we call ‘quantum tunneling.’ It occurs when a particle in a bound state is suddenly found to escape its confinement despite not possessing enough energy to clear the potential barrier ‘walls.’

Quantum tunnelling is a part of the theoretical branch of physics known as quantum mechanics. It states that electrons can behave like both particles and waves, and can cancel the effects of an energy barrier if the energy barrier is thin enough, due to quantum mechanics being dependent on probability.
